Hi, I’m Warren Oberholser. I’m a realtor in the East Bay Tri-Valley area in Northern California. My goal is to help both buyers and sellers get maximum results for one of their biggest investments, their home.
Do you know what my dentist asked me yesterday? Can you buy a home using Bitcoin? Well, here’s the answer:
First of all, what is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is the world’s first widely adopted cryptocurrency.
What Is Cryptocurrency?
“A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that is secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend. Many cryptocurrencies are decentralized networks based on blockchain technology—a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers. A defining feature of cryptocurrencies is that they are generally not issued by any central authority, rendering them theoretically immune to government interference or manipulation.”-Investopedia
A simple definition is, Bitcoin is digital money that allows secure and seamless peer-to-peer transactions on the internet.
The answer is yes. In fact, it’s already been done. Back in 2017, there was a purchase for a home in Texas, and in Manhattan, they did a large development using Bitcoin.
The bottom line is both buyer and seller must be in agreement of using Bitcoin.
If you’re considering using Bitcoin for your next home purchase, here are a couple of items I recommend you thoroughly understand.
Number One: If you’re the seller, make sure you have a thorough understanding of what digital money really is, so do your own due diligence.
Number Two: If you plan to use a title company to hold escrow, make sure you find one who will work with Bitcoin. I did reach out to a couple of local title companies in my area, and neither would accept it.
I hope you enjoyed this article. Please let me know if you have any questions. Warren
